Local Sailing School Honoured

OCTOBER 1996

Ottawa Sailing School was awarded the William Abbott Senior Trophy for 1996 at the Royal St. Lawrence Yacht Club in Montreal by the CYA. The trophy was given for recognition of excellence in sail training. The award comes as a result of many unique programs developed and taught by first class instructors. Ottawa Sailing School is very proud with its achievement and plans to continue offering the best in boating education and on-the-water adventure.

Here is Martin Cleary's SPORTS CHAT report as printed in the Ottawa Citizen:

Sailing school honored

The Ottawa Sailing School, a private training program that leases space from the Britannia Yacht Club, started in 1993 with one Sonar boat, one course and one instructor. Three years later, the school has three Sonars, two Sharks, one powerboat, 24 courses, 18 instructors, and one national award to hang on its wall. The Canadian Yachting Association presented the Ottawa Sailing School the William Abbott Senior Trophy on Oct. 25 for excellence in sail training. Abbott is recognized for his dedication to youth sailing and training in southwestern Ontario. About 200 students have participated in on- and off-water courses this year. The school also worked with students from D. Aubrey Moodie Intermediate School in Nepean last year in a boat design project, which was incorporated into the classes' French, science and technology subjects. "I've been at it (sailing) for 25 to 30 years," says Ron Schute, the school owner and director. "Then I decided to get into the teaching side. It was another something I wanted to try out."
