INTERNET COURSE OFFERS BOATERS CERTIFICATION IN COASTAL NAVIGATION

With the launch this week of coastalnavigation.com, boaters around the world can now study coastal navigation and earn internationally recognized certification on the World Wide Web.

The e-learning program covers the curriculum of the Canadian Yachting Association's Coastal Navigation Standard. Students can take the course on the internet and upon successful completion of the course achieve national certification. Certification in the United States will soon be available through a US version.

The course was created by two CYA-certified coastal navigation instructors. "We've been working on this for two years," says creator Warren Chafe. "We certainly didn't think it would take that long when we started, but we wanted to make sure the course was complete, well-written and easy to follow. The feedback so far is that we succeeded."

Co-creator Eric Calvert points out that coastalnavigation.com is able reach a wide audience: "Not everyone can attend a classroom-based coastal navigation course. It might not be offered where they live, or their schedule just doesn't permit it. An e-learning program like this means a lot more sailors and powerboaters can become qualified navigators."

The topics covered in the course include understanding nautical charts, the Canadian buoyage system, using the compass, fundamental plotting techniques, and reading tide and current tables. Content is presented in 10 extensively-illustrated sections, while quizzes and plotting exercises allow students to test their knowledge and hone their skills as they progress.

Students pay a tuition fee which gives them a password to access the course on the Internet. Materials such as practice charts and plotting tools are sent by mail. The fee also covers writing the CYA exam.

"This is a great way to learn coastal navigation," says Ron Schute, owner of the Ottawa Sailing and Powerboating Schools, an award-winning centre for boating instruction. "Anyone with an Internet connection can get the same quality of instruction we offer in the classroom; and they can do it at their convenience, at their own pace."

Information on how to register, and sample lessons, can be found at www.coastalnavigation.com.
